Teenage couple held for dumping baby

KUCHING: Police have arrested a 16-year-old couple to assist in a probe into a baby-dumping case at Kampung Siol Kandis here early this morning.

District police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the couple, believed to be lovers, was arrested less than four hours after the incident.

“Both individuals involved admitted to having left the baby girl at the scene after she was born at 2am.

“Also confiscated were clothes used by them during the incident, a motorcycle, a mobile phone and towel.”

Ahsmon said the teenage girl and her baby were taken to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for medical examination while the placenta was sent to the SGH Forensic Department.

The male suspect is currently detained at the Kuching district police headquarters lock-up for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, they could face up to seven years in prison or a fine, or both.

In the 5.30am incident, villagers were shocked to find a newborn baby placed in a motorcycle basket at a house in Kampung Siol Kandis.
