LIMBANG: The number of teenage pregnancies here has increased from January to August alone this year.

Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah said based on the state Health Department’s statistics, from January to August this year, Limbang recorded a total of 17 cases of teenage pregnancies.

“For the whole year of 2018, a total of 24 cases were recorded.

“Therefore, it is possible to see an increase this year as we have three more months before the end of the year.

“Public and private agencies in the state are working hard to address this issue by providing awareness, advocacy and prevention programmes,” he said during his opening speech at a sex education awareness programme at SMK Kubong here yesterday.

He added that the responsibility of curbing this issue and other social issues could not depend on one party alone.

“All these issues need to be addressed together. Parents have the most important role to play in educating and monitoring their children’s behaviours,” he pointed out, adding that children should be instilled with religious knowledge from an early age in order to reduce social problems.

The two-day event, which aimed to raise awareness and advocacy for preventing pregnancy among adolescents/students, was attended by 250 students and 150 parents.
