Teenager fined RM500 for buying illegal lottery

KUCHING: A teenage boy was sentenced to a fine of RM500 or two months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court today for buying a public lottery without a license at a café in Batu Kawah.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali sentenced the 18-year-old accused after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

According to the charges, he was charged with possessing public lottery tickets without a license in a cafe in Batu Kawah at around 1.15pm on Aug 14.

Based on the facts of the case, a police team from the Kuching district police Criminal Investigation Department conducted a raid at a cafe because it was believed that there was public gambling without a license.

As a result of the inspection, a man was arrested with equipment suspected of being used to buy public lottery tickets without a license.

The belongings of the accused were also confiscated and messages on the mobile phone contained the numbers of unlicensed public lottery tickets and cash amounting to RM110.

The report from the investigation and a report from gambling experts confirmed that the phone belonging to the accused had illegal public lottery numbers.

The prosecution of the case was handled by prosecuting officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad while the accused was not represented by a counsel.
