KUCHING: A teenager accused of theft was granted bail despite the misgivings of the prosecution as he wished to help his father do contract work to support the family.

Sessions Court Judge Maris Agan released the 18-year-old on a bail of RM4,000 with a local surety, namely his father, today.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohammad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff had earlier not offered bail to prevent the boy from repeating the alleged offence as well as to prevent him from fleeing.

The teenager, who was not represented in Wednesday’s proceedings, stands charged with stealing a smartphone, RM450 as well as a watch belonging to a teenage girl in February.

He pleaded not guilty to committing the act in a house in Kampung Sungai Midin, Semerah Padi around 3.30am on Feb 2.

He was charged under Section 392 of the Penal Code read together with Section 397 of the same code which carries a jail term of up to 14 years and liable to a fine or whipping.
