KUCHING: Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS) is actively conducting programmes to strengthen youth in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) fields especially those in rural and interior areas.

Its Board of Trustee Member Datuk Dennis Ngau said this is one of TEGAS’s target for this year and it will be carried out through community outreach programme.

“TEGAS also aids in supporting startups through various accelerator programmes, bootcamps, and courses, providing them exposure to experts and industry leaders in their respective fields, thereby fostering more talent in the entrepreneurial landscape.

“In summary, all programmes organised by TEGAS fully support the vision and mission of the Sarawak government,” he said during the TEGAS Hari Raya Gathering at TEGAS Digital Village yesterday evening (Apr 28).

Later when met at the sidelines, Dennis said TEGAS’s primary objective is to instil interest among secondary school students to explore technical study subjects, especially those from rural areas who have completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

Dennis, who is also one of the founding members of TEGAS, said for this year they have conducted STEM and TVET programmes in cities like Kuching, Miri, Bintulu and Sibu which involved organising talks to secondary school students.

“We went to the rural secondary schools there to give talks about technical studies to attract students who were still in secondary school.

“I would not be able to list down all of what we had done, but basically, TEGAS has in my opinion, successfully created interest for the young generation, primarily students form secondary schools to go into technical studies,” he said.

Dennis also recounted the time of how TEGAS came to be successful when Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg introduced the digital economy concept.

“As you can see, TEGAS has developed into something like an institution which you can see in the TEGAS Digital Village where we prioritise digital studies, innovation and digital business among others.

“I am very happy and proud to be part of the pioneering team for TEGAS to witness many of the younger generation students developing interests in taking STEM subjects,” he said.
