KUCHING: The Socio-Economic Working Committee under the Special Council on Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) has discussed specific issues related to telecommunications.

The online meeting, which was held for the third time yesterday (Apr 6), was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here.

“We have also embarked on efforts towards a digital economy since 2017, recognising the importance of data and innovation that will be the catalyst of technological development.

“With the Covid-19 pandemic, telecommunications has become a must and it is appropriate that related issues are discussed and resolved,” said Awang Tengah.

Awang Tengah also thanked the federal government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for assuring that issues related to MA63 would be discussed fairly during the prime minister’s recent visit to Kuching.

Recently, Muhyiddin said the federal government will evaluate fairly all claims made by Sarawak, especially those involving the MA63.

The prime minister also gave an assurance that Sarawak’s rights will continue to be protected based on the Federal Constitution.

He said this commitment is shown by the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government through the establishment of the portfolio on Sabah and Sarawak Affairs as well as the Special Council on MA63.

The meeting was chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

Also attended were Senior Minister and International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, and Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
