Ten arrests a day keep crime at bay

KUCHING: A total of 1,745 suspects, most of them locals, were arrested for various criminal, narcotics and commercial offences in the first six months of this year.

District police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the arrests involved 1,483 men, 211 women and 51 juvenile suspects.

“On average 10 suspects were arrested each day during the period,” he said in a statement today, adding a total of 1,693 were locals and 52 were foreigners.

He said police successfully prosecuted a total of 1,298 suspects in court, comprising 1,104 men, 151 women and 43 juveniles.

Between January and June he said police also managed to track down 68 wanted persons.

“With this success, the criminal investigation department (CID) managed to achieve a 42 per cent charge rate and a 56 per cent case resolution rate.

“These efforts have helped control the crime situation in Kuching District with the threshold value measurement registering a decrease of 45 per cent, while index and non-index cases recorded a decrease of 524 cases equivalent to 44 per cent.”

As for the narcotics criminal investigation department (NCID), he said they achieved a case charge rate of 90.61 per cent and a case resolution rate of 69.70 per cent.

“Meanwhile, the traffic investigation and enforcement department achieved a charge rate of 90 per cent and case resolution rate of 96.42 per cent, while the commercial crime investigation department (CCID) recorded a case charge rate of 36.22 per cent and case resolution rate of 8.67 per cent.

Based on the 2022 blueprint, Ahsmon said his office is committed to providing the best service which is outlined through 15 initiatives.

“This office will continue to ensure the well-being of the community in the district can be maintained in line with the three focuses of the national police chief.”
