Ten families of fire victims get relief aid

KUCHING: A total of 10 families of fire victims from three different areas namely Kampung Bako Ulu, Kampung Tabuan Hilir and Kampung Bintawa Hilir here received fire relief aid from the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

The aid totalling RM59,250 were in form of cash, food items, school supplies, school uniforms, clothes, kitchen supplies, sleeping equipment, immediate assistance and building materials aid that was distributed by Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah.

According to Fatimah, the number of fire cases from January to 5 July, this year has increased compared to prevoius years.

“This year from January to 5 July, there 108 fire cases in Sarawak involving a total of 394 families with 1,845 victims.

“Therefore, the government has given a total RM2,194,235.30 as the fire relief aid,” she said in her speech during the fire relief aid presentation at Surau Darul Iman, Kampung Bintawa Hilir here on Thursday.

She also said it is advisable that every village security and development committee ( JKKK) now should set up a Fire and Rescue (BOMBA) volunteer team.

“The volunteer team will provide the necessary help to control the fire while waiting for the Bomba to arrive at the scene,” she stressed.

She also said that the volunteer team could help to control the traffic flow in the village in order to give ways for smooth traffic flow for the Bomba to arrive.

“We also need to take precautions especially pertaining to our house electricty wiring and electrical equipments usage in our house to prevent fire that could destroy our house,” she told.
