LUNDU: Tenders have been called for another RM4.8 million worth of Sarawak Alternative Water Supply (SAWAS) project for Kampung Pugu, Kampung Sekambal, Selarat, and Matang Terap Lundu through the Rural Water Supply Department (RWSD).

The project will solve the water problem in several villages and boost the livestock and agriculture industry in her constituency, said Tanjong Datu assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu.

“The freshwater lobster industry is one of the industries with great potential to be developed,” she said during the closing ceremony of the Lundu district AgriCOP water quality and freshwater lobster breeding course at Mahligai Gading multipurpose hall last Thursday.

She said the breeding of freshwater lobster carried out on a large scale would benefit the fishermen especially during the monsoon season whenever they were unable to head to the sea.

“In addition, the lobster catch can also be used as an alternative for fishermen to generate more income,” she said.

She added that the lobster could be sold up to RM45 to RM80 per kilo.

Earlier, Jamilah also released 3,000 of giant freshwater lobster seed and 3,000 Siakap (seabass) fish seed into the Batang Kayan river.

This is in order to maintain the ecosystem, increase the population of fish resources so that it can increase the fishermen’s income at the same time to attract tourists to Lundu district.
