MIRI: A total of RM30,000 contribution was given to Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) Miri branch to support its proposed educational activities.

Senadin rep Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin who handed over the aid said it would be used to purchase seven smart projectors at RM3,000 each and the balance RM9,000 would be used for teachers’ educational training programmes in Miri.

He added that the contribution would help to upgrade their (teachers’) teaching skills in utilising Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

“I have always supported the STU all these years ever since I was elected as a state assemblyman for Senadin.

“STU can rest assured that I will continue to help STU Miri in particular,” the state Transport Minister said at the STU executive council meeting here yesterday.

His text of speech was read out by Councillor Jeffery Phang as he was unable to attend the programme.

STU often acts as the voice relating to the teaching profession in Sarawak, Lee noted.

“Through STU, teachers throughout the state can share and propose the way forward on the development of education and issues on the betterment of teachers in Sarawak.

“I hope that the membership of STU can continue to grow to reflect their support for STU towards raising the standard of professionalism of teachers in Sarawak,” he added.

He emphasised on the noble profession and said teachers need to constantly improve themselves to pass on latest knowledge to the young generation.

Not only being a teacher for school, he said sometimes the teachers are also advisors to students and often guide them in their long journey of life.

“Very often, I notice that some educators even form a lasting friendship with their students even after they have finished their studies, regardless of their level of performances in their studies.

“This shows that, being an educator doesn’t stop in class and this clearly indicates the strong influence an educator has over his or her students and consequently the heavy responsibilities he or she has to shoulder,” he said.

Lee pointed out that education sector is ever-changing and constantly evolving from one generation to another generation.

Therefore, educators are facing different challenges every year, he pointed out.

“I hope that educators in this hall and out there can continue to stay motivated in teaching your students.

“Never give up on them, for every child can be a shining gem if they are well-polished.

“I hope that STU can continue to serve as the proper platform for teachers in Sarawak to channel any matters relating to their professional advancement as well as their rights and welfare,” he added.

At the same time, an appreciation plaque was given to Goh Ser Seng for his kind contribution through humanitarian project with the schools in Miri Division.

He and several mobile phone dealer shops, who wish to remain anonymous, donated around 9,600 of SIM Card for mobile phone device to the needy students in Miri Division.

“This kind deed rendered by them is part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) which deserves our commendation.

“I hope this sincere kind deed may be emulated by the other individuals or companies,” Lee pointed out.
