Tests show three new imported cases

KUCHING: Three imported Covid-19 cases were recorded in Sarawak today, bringing the total number positive cases to 709.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in a statement, said case 707 was a local woman who had just returned from Saudi Arabia.

The case who worked as a nurse at a hospital in Mecca returned to Malaysia via the King Khalid International Airport, Riyadh on the night of Sept 24 and arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 25 before continuing her flight to Kuching at night on the same day.

At Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA-1), she tested negative and then she flew to Kuching where she was immediately sent to a designated hotel for a 14-day mandatory quarantine.

On Sept 27, she was tested again and the result came back positive the next day. As she showed no signs and symptoms of the disease, she was referred to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for treatment.

SDMC said the case has been categorised as imported because she was infected while she was abroad.

The committee then said as for cases 708 and 709, they are a husband and wife holding Myanmar citizenships and had just returned through Kuala Lumpur.

Case 708 who is a university lecturer in Sarawak went home to Myanmar for a holiday last Feb 25.

On Sept 12, the couple flew from Yangon, Myanmar to Malaysia through KLIA-1. At Kuala Lumpur, they were quarantined tested on the same day. The results came back negative. The second tests on Sept 21 were also negative and they continued their quarantine until Sept 25.

SDMC said on Sept 26, they flew to Kuching via KLIA-1. In Kuching they were quarantined because they had yet to stay in Malaysia for 30 days before entering Sarawak.

On Sept 27, both were screened and the results came back positive on Sept 29. They also showed no signs and symptoms of the disease and were referred to SGH for treatment on the same day.

Meanwhile, there are no new recoveries and discharged from hospital. The total number of recoveries and discharged cases remains at 682 or 96.19 percent of the total cases.

The committee said the total cases that are still receiving treatment at the hospital had increase to three, bringing the total numbers of those receiving treatment to eight cases, with four cases in SGH, three in Hospital Miri, and one in Bintulu Hospital.


While there is no Covid-19 cases that are being treated at the intensive care unit (ICU). And one reported case in Sandakan, Sabah which had received treatment at Bintulu Hospital has been allowed to discharged from the hospital on Sept 29.

There were 11 new person-under-investigation (PUI) cases reported and one PUI are still awaiting laboratory test results.

On the number of persons-under surveillance (PUS), 65 have been checked into designated hotels to undergo quarantine, bringing the total number of PUS at 11 hotels to 815.

To date, 24,669 PUS have completed their quarantine period.
