TANJUNG MANIS: Ten crew members of a vessel from Thailand have been detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for encroaching into Malaysian waters.

A MMEA Tanjung Manis spokeperson in a statement yesterday said the arrest was made at 3.30pm on Wednesday some 1.8 nautical miles off the northwest of Tanjung Jerijeh.

The foreign vessel from Thailand has been detained by MMEA on Wednesday.

“Rescue Boat 8, while carrying out a routine patrol on Feb 19, spotted a foreign vessel sailing in a suspicious condition.

“Upon inspection, the vessel was found to have violated the Fisheries Act 1985 for not having a written permission from the Fisheries Department.

“The crew also failed to submit a port clearance pass under the Customs Act 1967.

“In addition, two of the crew members were found not to have valid passports or identification documents under the Immigration Act 1959/1963,” the statement added.

All crew members as well as the ship have been referred to the Tanjung Manis Maritime Zone for further action.
