Thailand has a new two Michelin-starred restaurant and has expanded its one-starred club with the addition of 10 new establishments in the latest edition of the Michelin guide.
For the 2019 edition of the Michelin guide for Thailand, inspectors expanded their coverage beyond the capital to two Southern regions — Phuket and Phang-Nga.
In the tourist-heavy province of Phuket, inspectors bestowed Pru restaurant its first star for using ingredients from its organic farm and using local milk to make its own in-house butter.
Ruean Panya in Samut Sakhon and Suan Thip in Nonthaburi also debut as the first restaurants outside Bangkok to earn their first Michelin star.
The big winner in this year’s selection is contemporary European restaurant Suhring in Bangkok, which was promoted from one to two stars. Suhring joins Gaggan, Le Normandie and Mezzaluna as Thailand’s highest-ranked restaurants.
Opened in a restored 1970s townhouse in Bangkok, the restaurant is run by twin brothers Mathias and Thomas Suhring, who present their vision of German gastronomy.
But it’s the one-starred category that saw the biggest movement, with 10 restaurants across the country unlocking their first star. Seven of the 10 establishments serve Thai cuisine.
“This year’s selection highlights the diversity of culinary experiences, both within and outside of Bangkok. We have also seen a blooming trend of the degustation menu, whereby chefs carefully design a complete gastronomic experience for diners,” said international director Gwendal Poullennec in a statement.
Overall, the dining guide features four, two-starred restaurants and 23 one-star establishments. – Relaxnews
