KUCHING: The Chinese Martial Art Association (CMAA) lion dance team is all geared up to be resplendently decked in their vibrant costumes to add colour, sound, and festive cheer during the upcoming Chinese New Year (CNY).

This is possible due to the latest decision by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to relax the earlier standard operating procedure (SOP) which had prohibited lion and dragon dances during CNY, following a successful appeal by the Sarawak Dragon-Lion Dance and Wushu Association.

The CMAA lion dance team represented by team coaches Nelson Nguang Kim Ban and Calvin Kong Nyon Chung had also recently received a boost with the sponsorship of a new set of specially designed team costume from its advisor Kapitan Tan Kun Gee, who is also the managing director of Gee Realty Sdn Bhd.

Nguang and Kong said the team members were all eager to do their CNY rounds after two years of not performing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team members added that similarly, many families were longing and looking forward to seeing the lions in action during CNY.

Both Nguang and Kong, who shared some 50 years of experience between them in managing and coaching lion dance teams, assured that they would ensure that team members adhere to the set SOP.
