KUCHING: Internal conflicts in the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak proved that lawyer-politicians do not guarantee the best deals for their constituents.

Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) president Lina Soo pointed out that it was not always in the people’s best interest to elect lawyers to represent them in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN).

“Voting in a lawyer-politician to represent you in DUN does not guarantee you a representative who will speak up for you and fight for you.

“Has it not already been proven that the party with the most number of lawyers has failed most in serving the rakyat?

“And again, the party with the most number of lawyers has made the most deceiving election promises and failed most miserably in serving the rakyat once they are in power?” she said in a statement on Sunday.

She was referring to the war of words between two Sarawak DAP lawyer-elected politicians — chairman Chong Chieng Jen and recently resigned vice-chairman Wong King Wei.

Following Wong’s sudden resignation from the party, Chong admitted the party has made a poor judgment of character of one of its members and labelled Wong as a traitor.

Soo said Sarawak needed true Sarawakians who will fight with all heart and soul for the rakyat and the state.

“When voters realise that the service and commitment of an elected representative is based upon his willingness to serve the rakyat and society rather than just a paper qualification, then the voters have reached political maturity.

“If a political party can make such wrong decision in judging its candidate’s character to offer to the people, will the same party not make wrong and poor judgement in other matters?

“Can we trust this (DAP) party then to rule and govern Sarawak with good judgement then?  This question I leave for voters to answer,” she said.
