KUCHING: About 5,000 visitors from various walks of life thronged the joint Chinese New Year open house organised by the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).

The open house, which was held at Dewan MBKS, Jalan Padungan here today, was attended by Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang and MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

Wee, when met by the media, said the presence of people of various races, religions and ages proved the spirit of unity among the people of Sarawak.

In fact, he said, the purpose of this open house is not just to celebrate the Chinese New Year but to bring people together to celebrate the festivity.

“We will continue holding open houses, and if possible, we will rotate this combination of open houses to be organised in other areas next year.

“We don’t want anyone to be left behind, but bring everyone together to celebrate,” he said.

He added that people can interact with each other throughout this festive season while at the same time dining together at the same table.

“Therefore, we ask the members of the public to continue this bond of harmony that we have inherited for a long time and do not allow anyone to come and tarnish the unity and harmony in Sarawak,” he said.
