Lau to pay heed on these during his term as senator

SIBU: Chairman of Bawang Assan branch of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Robert Lau Hui Yew who sworn in as a senator today will pay more heed to three areas during his three-year term.

He said the first and foremost will be Sarawak’s rights and interest under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report.

“Sarawak and Sabah are to be treated as equal partners in the federation of Malaysia. It is the federation of Malaysia of 1963 as laid out in the Cobbold Commission and not the federation of Malaya 1957 provided for in the Reid Commission,” said Lau in his Facebook posting after the swearing-in ceremony before Senate president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran at Dewan Negara.

Secondly, he said, as a member of the legislature, he will do his part to ensure the principle of the separation of powers among the three pillars of the democratic system of government (the legislature, executive and judiciary) be abided by.

His third concerns were his hometown Sibu and the Rajang Basin which to him had seen its glory days in the natural resources and commodity boom over the last half a century.

“We now urgently need to renew and grow the economy so as to provide jobs and hope to those in this area. This will call for investments in the public facilities and infrastructures and the private sectors to reinvest in their community,” he said.

Located at the heart of Sarawak, Lau said Sibu is the gateway to the vast hinterland where many of the Iban and other communities live and they need equal access as those in the cities in the Peninsular where otherwise they will always be left behind.

His hope for the country, as shared by many of those past leaders such as Tunku Abdul Rahman, was that every citizen can live in a stable, democratic, progressive and a moderate society and that the policies of the government are fair and just to all.

Other Sarawakians who was also sworn in as senators were Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Wanita honorary secretary Susan Chemerai Anding and Parti Rakyat Sarawak deputy secretary-general Rita Sarimah Patrick Insol.

Apart from the trio, Sepanggar Umno chief Datuk Yakubah Khan was also sworn in as senator for the first time while Datuk Bashir Alias was sworn in for his second term during the ceremony. – Bernama
