Three best debating schools win prizes

KUCHING: The Sarawak Chief Minister Trophy Parliamentary Style (RTM Version) Debate Competition 2018 for Zone A (Kuching), Zone B (Padawan), Zone C (Samarahan and Serian) yesterday witnessed SMK Bako Kuching, SMK Agama Matang Jaya 2 and SMK Kota Samarahan emerging champions in their respective zones.

SMK Bako Kuching, SMK Agama Matang Jaya 2, SMK Kota Samarahan will represent their respective zones in the Inter-Zone Level of the Sarawak Chief Minister Trophy Parliamentary-Style Debate Competition 2018 scheduled to be held on September 19 in Sibu and Miri.

In the finals for Zone A, Zone B and Zone C held at the RTM Kuching Mini Auditorium here yesterday, SMK Bako represented by Aina Nazira Mohd Abdullah, Faris Ajmal Ujang Zahid Sentosa Akbakri, Nasharyna Rosli and Mohd Izzat Radzuan (Reserve) as the proposer for the motion “Internet the Best Learning Resources for Students” defeated SMK Seri Setia to emerge champion for Zone A (Kuching).

SMK Seri Setia was represented by Nurhanizah Mohd Nizam, Nurul Manissa Rosli, Mohamad Syarifee  Ranie Kelana and Nur Aalia Saat (Reserve).

Meanwhile, SMK Agama Matang 2 comprising  Nurul Sabrina Bohari, Muhammad Bahrin Al-Bahri, Muhammad Nuraiman Haqim Wasi and Nur Khairunnisa Nadzrah Fatimah, as the opposer of the motion “Co-curriculum Forms Brilliant Person” defeated SMK Matang Jaya to emerge champion for Zone B (Padawan). 

SMK Matang Jaya was represented by Muhd. Nazrul Zawawi Mohd Sarkawi, Nurzatul Sakina Amalina Zaidel, Nur Sabrina Maklen and Nuraina Hadirah Muhammad Irwan (Reserve).

Meanwhile, SMK Kota Samarahan comprising Mohamad Fitri Azri, Wan Nuraina Aqilah Wan Nazarulihan, Ahmad Arba’in Ashahrydin and Raul Rifaie Ronney (Reserve), as the proposer of the motion “Social Page Strengthen Family Bonds” defeated SMK Tebekang to emerge champion for Zone C (Samarahan and Serian).

SMK Tebakang was represented by Dayang Nur Farrahin Awg Jolkif, Conrad Barneslee Libio, Farica  Mahar David and Kimberley Debbie Rikos (Reserve).

SMK Bako Kuching, SMK Agama Matang Jaya 2, SMK Kota Samarahan which emerged champions in their respective zones received cash prize RM1,500, trophies plus certificates; while the runner-ups – SMK Seri Setia, SMK Matang Jaya and SMK Tebakang each went home with cash prize of RM1,000, trophies and certificates.

The Best Debators for Zone A, Zone B and Zone C respectively were Nasharyna Rosli of SMK Bako Kuching, Nurul Sabrina Bohari of SMK Agama Matang 2 and Mohamad Fitri Azri of SMK Kota Samarahan. They each received RM500, a trophy and a certificate.

Also present were Deputy Director of RTM Sarawak (Broadcasting), Faridah Sulong.

The Sarawak Chief Minister Trophy Debate Competition was first held in 1986. This year, a total of 26 schools from Zone A, B and C competed in the early stages of debate competition which started from August 7.

The grand final will be held at the RTM Kuching Auditorium in Kuching.
