SARATOK: Three people died while three others were severely injured in a road accident at KM51, Jalan Betong-Sarikei on Monday (Oct 26).
Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the accident at 5.20pm involved a car and a loaded cargo truck.
Investigation revealed that the truck was heading to Bintangor when the car suddenly entered the opposite lane, resulting in a head-on collision.
“There were six people in the car and due to the collision, three were trapped and killed while the other three sustained severe injuries.
“Saratok firefighters helped to extricate the trapped victims who were later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
“They were identified as Raju Lian, 43, Irene Jerah, 44, and Vanessa Deborah Medan, 16. Their bodies were taken to Saratok Hospital for post mortem,” he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the three other severely injured victims (two male and a female) aged 13 to 20, were referred to Saratok Hospital for early treatment and later to Sibu Hospital for further treatment.
Both the cargo truck driver and a passenger were unharmed in the incident.
