KUCHING: Three of the six locals who were duped by a non-existent job syndicate to work in a call centre in Cambodia have returned safely to their families.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri confirmed this in an exclusive interview with New Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak yesterday (Aug 24).

“The victims who have returned, are from Kuching, Sibu and Padawan. Meanwhile, the remaining three are still in the process of coming home.

“The victims came home through assistance from the embassy there,” he said.

He explained that in Sibu, police managed to arrest an agent, who is suspected to be responsible for arranging the victim’s travel to Cambodia.

He added that efforts are still ongoing to track down another suspect there (Sibu).

In Kuching and Padawan, no one has been arrested as the victims did not have any information on the person who arranged for their travel.

Azman pointed out that so far this year, Sarawak police had received six cases of victims being duped into working in Cambodia.

He advised people who are looking for jobs, to always double check any job offer that they receive and make sure that it is authentic.

“Based on our experience, it is the awareness that the people need to have as they are usually excited with the offer to work abroad with salaries being paid in US Dollars.

“They can always discuss the matter with their families and friends and think it over.

“In addition, they can always refer it to the police or through the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) hotline,” he said.
