SIBU: The recent misfortune which struck the residents of Rumah Saba in Sungai Enseluai, Sarikei during which a fire destroyed the longhouse, has caught the attention of the public.

Three non-governmental organisations (NGOs) had helped to reduce the burden of the longhouse folk by presenting them with contributions.

The NGOs were Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU), Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) Sibu, SIDS Sarikei, SIDS Bintangor and Iban State Officers Club (ISOC).

The contributions, in the form of monetary aid, were handed over by the secretary-general of SDNU, Dato Ir Alice Jawan, who is also SIDS Sibu chairperson, to the longhouse chief, Tuai Rumah Saba, at the longhouse site.

The fire, which gutted the longhouse on 9 April, left one resident dead, 96 others homeless and totally destroyed the longhouse.
