KUCHING: The move taken by Kuching City South Council (MBKS) to cancel the annual Chinese New Year (CNY) Bazaar at Kenyalang Park is a wise one, said Sarawak Business Federation secretary-general Jonathan Chai Voon Tok.

He said looking at the rising number of positive Covid-19 registered in Kuching in the past few days, it is the right decision to put off the bazaar first.

“Personally, I support the decision of MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong See that there will be no annual CNY Bazaar at Kenyalang Park this year,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Sunday (Jan 10).

He said this is because the bazaar tended to draw crowds which might increase the chance of further virus outbreak and it would be difficult to practise social distancing among the shoppers and consequently, there would be risk of forming a new cluster of infection if the standard operating procedure (SOP) is not strictly observed.

“Even though the situation in Sarawak is still very much under control for the time being as compared to what has been happening in West Malaysia.

“But we cannot take things for granted and we should not have a lackadaisical attitude towards fighting the pandemic,” he said.

He said the people need to be sensible and stay vigilant at all times, avoid crowded places, put on face mask whenever we go out, washing our hands more frequent than usual and maintain social distancing as prescribed by the relevant authorities to curb the spread of the virus.

Last Saturday (Jan 9), Wee in his weekly live talk on Facebook said the annual CNY Bazaar at Kenyalang Park will be cancelled in view of the worsening Covid-19 situation in the city and Sarawak.
