MIRI: The rural communities have welcomed the federal government’s initiatives to introduce mobile banking services equipped with automated teller machines (ATM) in rural Sarawak at the end of January next year.

People in Long Lama and Bekenu are letting a sigh of relief after the announcement was made by Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz at the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday.

“It’s a huge relief to us all. All this while, we don’t have any banking facilities here. We have to travel all the way to Miri to withdraw money to buy essential items. Some couldn’t afford to travel regularly to the city due to transportation problem.”

“It’s a timely move and I do believe that the rural folk will benefit from the banking services once the government implements it. It will help ease their trouble of getting to travel all the way to the Miri to withdraw money.”
