Thumbs up to traditional beauty pageants

MIRI: Gawai-themed multiracial traditional beauty pageants embody the spirit of cultural preservation and the celebration, said Deputy Premier  Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

“It is one of the ways the Dayak community can use to preserve their rich culture and traditions,” he said.

In stating this during the 17th Miri Divisional Gawai celebration on Saturday, Uggah added the event  was not only about showcasing the beautiful  dance performances, traditional gear  and clothes.

“It is unique to Sarawak and truly shows the appreciation of Sarawak’s diverse culture with an emphasis on the beautiful people of Sarawak. 

Uggah’s text of speech was read out by Deputy Minister for Transport I,  Datuk Dr Jerip Susil.

He applauded the working committee, namely, the Miri Resident Office, District Offices and 12 Dayak ethnic associations in Miri Division and the main host, the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) led by Captain Bernard Idit, for successfuly organising the event.

Next year,   Persatuan Masyarakat Saban Sarawak will  host  the event.

Uggah added that this year’s slogan ‘Bipakat,Bisindi Ngajung Pimanchang’ or Unity Towards Progressiveness was very timely for the Dayaks as they worked together in diversity towards their goal to be successful as a community. 

Uggah also pledged a grant of RM50,000 towards the event while Jerip pledged a grant of RM30,000.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Transport II, Datuk Henry Harry Jinep pledged RM10,000.  Deputy Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development II (Regional Development) Martin Ben, Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon and Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau pledged RM5,000 each

Also present were Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) chief executive officer (CEO),   Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik  and Miri Deputy Resident Juan Ubit.
