KUCHING: Sri Aman Hospital carried out the first thyroid surgery at the hospital on Monday (Apr 18).

According to Dr Aimir Ma’rof, a general surgeon at the hospital, the surgery was performed on a 42-year-old patient from Lubok Antu

“It is the first thyroid surgery performed at Sri Aman Hospital,” said the doctor from Kuala Lumpur who has been working at the hospital.

When contacted by New Sarawak Tribune on Tuesday (Apr 19), he revealed that it involved a team of surgical and anaesthetic staff including himself and medical officers, as well as staff in the operating theatre comprising nurses, assistant medical officers (AMO) and hospital attendants.

“As such, in conjunction with the upgrading of Sri Aman Hospital as a specialist hospital and also the ‘lead hospital’ for the Southeast of Sarawak Cluster Hospital, this achievement is seen as a good starting point in efforts to expand access to surgical care to residents in the southeast zone of Sarawak zone, especially in Betong, Lubok Antu and other surrounding areas.

“Thus, health services in the southeast zone of Sarawak are expected to improve with the completion of a new hospital building (Sri Aman Hospital II) that will be fully operational soon,” he said.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the Sri Aman Hospital II is 99.5 per cent complete as of April 5.

The new hospital will be equipped with a total 108 beds and with specialist doctor services.
