SIBU: A total of 351 badminton players are expected to compete in the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2017 badminton championship which will be held in
Stadium Perpaduan Negeri Sarawak, Petra Jaya in Kuching from April 4 to 9.
Among the participating countries are Malaysia (46 players), Denmark (24 players), South Korea (17 players), China (40 players), Hong Kong (16 players), Chinese Taipei (37 players), Germany (3 players), Thailand (20 players), England (11 players), Indonesia (53 players), India (32 players), France (1 players), Japan (24 players), Spain (1 players), United State of America (1 players), Singapore (7 players), Bulgaria (3 players), Russia (3 players), Egypt (6 players) and Australia (6 players).
Sibu Division Resident, Hii Chang Kee said tickets for the championship are also available on sale at the authorised ticketing agents in Sibu.
He said the ticketing agents are Lea Sports Centre outlets in Wisma Sanyan and Delta Mall (016-8863061); World Sports Equipment Sdn Bhd (016-8862255); TN Sports (013-8066699); Thump’s Up Badminton Academy (019-8291868) and Pro Wira Badminton (012-8862627).
The tickets prices are RM20 for matches on April 5, RM30 for matches on April 6 and RM40 for matches on April 7, he added.
“The price for season tickets is RM175 and is valid throughout the championship.”
“Currently, the organiser is offering a discount of 20 per cent from the listed tickets prices for early birds who buy the tickets from now until March 20.”
“All the pre-event tickets for the semi-final and finals matches have been sold out. However, from March 29 onwards, all tickets are only available on sale at Sarawak Stadium, Petra Jaya from 11am until 5pm,” he said at a press conference held at Sibu Resident Office here on Monday.
According to Hii, those who bought the tickets will be issued with receipts and can redeem for the actual tickets from March 29 onwards.
He said the redemption of the tickets only be done in Kuching, namely at Level 2, Sarawak Stadium, Petra Jaya and Stadium Perpaduan Negeri Sarawak.
“We have received a lot of inquiries from the general public on the coming Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2017 badminton championship because of the highly anticipated clash of badminton titans Malaysia’s Datuk Lee Chong Wei and China’s Lin Dan.”
“The closing date of entries for the championship was March 11 and both players’ names are still in the list of those in the world’s top 10 who are expected to compete in the six-day event,” he said.
He said the organisers are hopeful the two badminton icons will come down to Kuching and participate in the event which is a top tier World Super Series event in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) calendar with US$600,000 (approximately RM2.5 million) total prize money.
Malaysia’s top men’s double Tan Wee Kiong–Goh V Shem and mixed double pair of Chan Peng Soon–Goh Liu Ying are among those expected to compete in the star-studded event, he added.
“It is therefore our hope for all the local badminton enthusiasts from throughout Sarawak to seize this opportunity to come to Stadium Perpaduan Negeri Sarawak, Petra Jaya when the event is on.”
“This is our golden opportunity to see the world class badminton players in action and we may not have similar opportunity to do so because there are so many other states who are eager to become the next host,” he said.
Hii also called on the supporters from the private sector to lend their support and cooperation in the coming event by encouraging their staff members to come and see the event.
“We are encouraging the private sector to buy the season tickets which are fully transferable and can be used throughout the event,” he said.
