KUCHING: It was multiracial Sarawak at its best. Chinese, Dayaks, Malays and Indians dressed in bright red and other colours celebrated Chinese New Year by going to open houses.
The celebration started off by making a beeline to the Chinese New Year open house organised by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) at its headquarters here yesterday.
As early as 9am, SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and his members together with the crowd waited for the arrival of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.
The crowd was treated to a buffet lunch after that. And there was also the God of Fortune who gave out sweets to the children.
Present were Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan and SUPP Youth chief Michael Tiang.
Abang Johari and his entourage then proceeded to the Sarawak government legal adviser Datuk Fong Joo Chung’s residence, and then to Plaza Merdeka Group managing director Datuk Steve Ng Thian Yew’s house.
The chief minister then visited Normah Medical Specialist Centre chief executive officer Datuk Dr Au Yong Kien Hoe at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg. He also visited Sarawak former deputy financial secretary Datin Laura Lee.
Abang Johari also visited former deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan.
