KUCHING: Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) suggested that Sarawak close its borders in an effort to curb the Covid-19 spread.

PSB Youth chief Johnical Rayong Ngipa said the move would be timely with the announcement of the growing number of positive cases in Sarawak.

“We strongly suggest that the Sarawak government close its borders and even look into limiting the movements of the public.

“Most cases in Sarawak are imported. It is high time for us to protect our citizens thus, the government must weigh the situation,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

He also said he disagreed with the introduction of foreigners and even West Malaysians into the state for instance, the Stay@Miri and Get Rewards programme and large flocks of Europeans coming into Sarawak for Visit Sarawak 2020.

“As we all are aware of, the current epicentre of Covid-19 is Europe. Why are we not imposing a rule to block them from coming?

“One life is too much. Generally, you need to be 15 minutes or more in the vicinity of an infected person, within one to two metres, to be considered at risk or a close contact,” he continued.

He praised the State Disaster Management Committee for fast action on the ever-evolving situation.

“I urge the government to look into extending school holidays plus inclusivity of taska and tadika. Together we can do it!” he said.

Yesterday, the state government announced control measures to prevent further escalation of Covid-19 in which, apart from issuing Stay Home Notice (SHN) to visitors, including returning Sarawakians coming into Sarawak; all schools had been instructed to extend the school holidays until March 29 while all tabika, taska and sekolah tahfiz in Sarawak were instructed to close for two weeks, effective today.
