SARATOK: Disposing used electronic and electrical goods properly can be tough, hence the Electronic and Electrical Waste Collection Campaign introduced by the government.

And Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri is glad that the campaign is now being extended to rural areas.

He said since public awareness on the proper disposal of electronic and electrical goods is still low, promotional efforts should be intensified, especially by local authorities.

“Some electronic and electrical goods are not suitable for disposal because they have certain components that may have a negative impact on the environment.

“That is why the government has introduced the campaign, given the need for greater public awareness,” he said when visiting the Electronic and Electrical Waste Collection Campaign here on Sunday (May 14).

He was thankful to the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) and the Saratok District Council for bringing this campaign to rural areas.

“I hope with this platform, the public will no longer dispose of washing machines, refrigerators, computers, televisions, telephones, radios, or any other electrical appliances that are broken into the river.

“Therefore, the campaign schedule or the timing for the public to sell electronic and electrical goods needs to be done in an organised manner.

“We want to encourage the public to be more responsible towards the environment,” he added.

Earlier, he attended a meeting with project-implementing agencies under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) of Kalaka constituency at the Saratok District Office.

He said he was doing his utmost to ensure all RTP projects were completed on schedule.

Saratok District Officer Haron Mahidi also attended the meeting.
