KUCHING: Rejang Port Authority chairman Clarence Ting (pic) was named Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman yesterday. He replaces outgoing chairman and PSB senior-vice president Datuk Tiong Thai King, 74 who has helmed SMC for 15 years.

Ting who is Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Pelawan chairman and former Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman was favorite to assume the post.

Speaking to the press yesterday, SUPP president and Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian hailed Ting’s appointment saying SMC needed a ‘strong’ chairman who can introduce new ways of doing things.

“We want to select the best people to do the job. It is also good that SUPP has many people to choose from but more importantly, we pick the best people for the job.” Sim also commented on Datuk Wee Hong Seng’s appointment as the new mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

“He has seven years’ experience in DBKU, he brings a breath of fresh air (with his appointment) and given that DBKU and MBKS are twins, they need to work hand-in-hand.

“I would like to thank Datuk James Chan for doing a fantastic job for the last 11 years as MBKS mayor and now I am looking forward to younger people to do the job.

Sim expressed his gratitude to the chief minister for promoting Datuk Lee Kim Shin as Transport Minister along with appointing SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting as the new Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister.

“This is good for GPS moving forward as with their appointment, we are not only able to serve the Chinese community but the whole of Sarawak better,” he added.
