KUCHING: Newly appointed Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting’s passion for his job has been highlighted and praised.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah believed that Ting’s enthusiasm for tourism, arts and culture would bring the ministry to a higher level.

“I have known Datuk Sebastian Ting for a long time and I am sure we will work together very well,” Abdul Karim said during the handover of duties at Baitul Makmur Building in Petra Jaya, yesterday.

During the ceremony, former Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who is now Transport Minister, handed over his duties to Ting.

There was also a handover of duties from the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry’s permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee to newly appointed Youth and Sports Ministry’s acting permanent secretary Nancy Jolhi.

Then Abdul Karim congratulated Lee, Ting and Nancy on their new appointments. He also thanked Lee for his service in the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.

Speaking of Lee, Abdul Karim highlighted his vast experience garnered from holding a number of posts as assistant minister in various ministries over the past 15 years.

“He is one of the most qualified members in the Cabinet,” he said.

Lee had served as Infrastructure Development and Communications Assistant Minister; Sports and Communications Assistant Minister; Tourism, Land, Air Transportation and Safety Assistant Minister; and Tourism, Art and Culture Assistant Minister prior to his new appointment last month.

He reminisced about his time in the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture which he first joined over three years ago under Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Lee recalled one of his first assignments was to look into the China market and he reported that some inroads had been made there.

“With Datuk Abdul Karim, I believe we have made some good progress. We have established a good foundation on which to move forward,” the Senadin assemblyman said.

He was sure that further progress and positive results would be made with Ting as his replacement.

For himself, Ting said he felt honoured and privileged because of the “new learning curve”.

“It’s true that I am very passionate about tourism, arts and culture as mentioned by Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah,” said the Piasau assemblyman. “The state must always come first so let’s work together for its sake.”
