KUCHING: Federal Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has strongly criticised Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Sale for his divisive views on race and religion, cautioning that such rhetoric poses a threat to national unity.

Tiong voiced his apprehension regarding what he termed as Akmal’s repeated attempts to exploit sensitive issues for personal political gain.

“As a leader, I hope that the Umno Youth chief can emulate the examples set by leaders within his own party, including the president and deputy president.

“It is imperative that, as the leader of a large and influential party, he takes proactive steps to unite the Malaysian people regardless of ethnicity, serving as a role model in respecting others and fostering unity among our diverse society,” he said in a Facebook post.

The recent controversy emerged after the approval of 10 new heritage foods by Heritage commissioner Mohamad Muda Bahadin, which included Bak Kut Teh among them.

Tiong clarified that the term ‘Bak’ refers to meat in general, and the dish can be prepared using various meats, with the herbs used being halal.

He proposed alternatives such as ‘Chi Kut Teh’ with chicken or ‘Seafood Kut Teh’ with seafood, underscoring the versatility of the dish.

However, Tiong noted that Akmal has persistently referred to the dish as ‘pork-based Bak Kut Teh,’ despite its broader definition encompassing different types of meat.

“I suggest Akmal refer to a dictionary for accurate definitions before making public statements to avoid embarrassing himself and spreading misinformation.

“As a leader of the younger generation, you should evaluate and analyse before speaking to a large audience,” he added.

Tiong further emphasised the importance of mutual respect and understanding, urging Akmal to refrain from engaging in divisive politics that could undermine national unity.

“In Motac, there are many leaders and staff who are Muslims, and I understand and respect all parties,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to promoting harmony and respect for diverse beliefs within the ministry.

Recently, Akmal demanded Tiong’s resignation and urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to remove the Bintulu MP from his position as Tourism Minister.

Akmal’s calls for Tiong’s dismissal came after Bak Kut Teh, a dish perceived as pork-based, was listed as one of Malaysia’s heritage foods.

Additionally, Akmal cited the demotion of Tourism Malaysia director-general Ammar Abd Ghapar as further grounds for Tiong’s removal from office.
