SEMATAN: The Tok Nan Open Sea Fishing Competition is a new tourist attraction, gathering 116 anglers competing for the big prize.

Deputy Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said the competition not only attracted locals but also foreigners, subsequently contributing to local economy.

“After two years of going through the pandemic, I see that many people have come to Sematan today.

“This shows that this place has been receiving a lot of visitors, especially during the holiday season, to relax and also join in the events here such as this fishing competition.

“With this many visitors, it provides an opportunity for local businesses to generate income.”

He told the media this after officiating at the competition here on Friday (June 10).

Present were Tanjong Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan, Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang and Lundu District officer Gustian Durani.

Rentap added that such programmes needed to be held not only in Sematan but also in Lundu as the state’s coastal line is long.

“Other than that, Rambungan can also be a venue for fishing competitions.

“Anglers can rent boats from local operators, which helps the business and the people to generate income.”

Meanwhile, Azizul said the competition would have a positive impact on the local economy.

“Both anglers and the local community will benefit, and I hope that this fishing competition will be held every year so that the people in the area can take this opportunity to make some money.”
