KUALA LUMPUR: Further studies are to be conducted to reduce rates and abolish tolls in the country, the result of which will be presented to the Cabinet in May next year.

Deputy Works Minister Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir said the government would appoint an independent consultant by next month to analyse all ongoing toll concessions in the country and to help look for short, medium and long term ways to reduce toll rates.

“The Cabinet, on Oct 31, after considering the direction of the highway toll highway, had agreed to give the Public Works Department (JKR) six months to submit proposals on possible ways to reduce the current toll rates on all highways.

“The Malaysian Highway Authority is in the process of appointing a consultant to conduct a study on highway tolls in Malaysia,” he said at the Dewan Negara here yesterday in reply to Senator Mohamad Imran Abd Hamid’s question on when the Pakatan Harapan (PH) will abolish toll collection as outlined in its manifesto.

Mohd Anuar said that although the government was trying to reduce toll rates and abolish highway tolls, it can only be done when the government’s finances have been stabilised and permitted to do so. – Bernama
