PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Tommy Thomas has resigned as attorney-general, apparently because Tun Mahathir Mohamad is losing in the race for premiership.

Speculations are rife that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has got the majority needed to form the next government.

Sources said Thomas must have seen his position no longer tenable if Muhyiddin becomes prime minister.

Thomas decided to drop charges against 12 individuals accused of having links to the now-defunct group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Muhyiddin, the then home minister, said it was not for the AG to make such decision but his.

He said it was his prerogative under the anti-money laundering law (AMLA) to declare any organisation or person to be terrorists. This law contains provisions on terrorism financing and proceeds of unlawful activities.

Thomas was appointed the AG following PH’s victory in the 14th general election, succeeding Apandi Ali. He has three months of his service to go.
