SIBU: “Focus” was the word most frequently mentioned by local top achievers in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) whose results were released on Wednesday.

One of them, Muhammad Hasif Fitri of SMK Sacred Heart said “focus” was what he mostly did in class.

“I would say it was the main key of my achievements,” he said, adding that it was to make sure that he did not miss anything taught by his teachers.

In addition, he sort of “forced” himself to do his homework and revised the lessons in order to understand them more. Muhammad achieved 8As in the SPM.

His friend Benedict Goh Kah Hong who got 11As also put a lot of reliance on focussing, saying it was a major factor in his success.

“At home I always do my homework, taking three to four hours to revise the lessons of the day and prepare for the next day,” he said.

Jose Emiliano Uzaraga, who is of Sino-Melanau-Filipino lineage, agreed with his friends Hasiff and Benedict as to the power of focussing in class.

“I focused in class in order to understand the subjects being taught. Besides that, doing homework and revising the lessons make me understand more,” he explained.

“I usually revised the lessons for three to four hours and I always added another hour to revise the lessons more especially prior to examinations,” he said.

A total of 25 students of SMK Sacred Heart Sibu achieved all As in last year’s SPM exam and helped elevate their school to the top spot in town by achieving the average school grade of 2.65. – Sarawak voice
