KUCHING: Sibu needs direct air links to other cities and towns to boost its tourism industry.

Dudong State Assemblyman, Datuk Tiong Thai King said the tourism industry had become an important sector that had an impact on development of the country.

He said the main benefits of tourism were  income creation and generations of jobs.

“Our Sibu Barisan Nasional (BN) Visionary Team has been negotiating with a few major China Airlines and other airlines for direct connectivity from Sibu to Foochow, Shanghai, Gunagzhou and other cities.

“It is most unfortunate to note that so far, we have not been successful.

“Thus, I hope our Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports will pay  attention to the issue of  long term direct connectivity between Sibu and other cities,”Tiong  added in his debate speech during the State Legislative Assembly sitting here yesterday.

According to him, Sibu, as the gateway to the central region of Sarawak, is strategically located and is equally important as Kuching in the South and Miri in the north as far as tourism is concerned.

Sibu Municipal Council, too, has taken the initiative to host the Visit Sibu Year 2017.

“With a series of promotion activities, we are ready to receive visitors both local and from abroad. But we lack  direct connectivity to facilitate the visitors.

“It is only justified that the federal government should grant full autonomy to the Sarawak government to make its own decision  pertaining to direct connectivity and to allow different airlines to give better services to boost our tourism industry,” said Tiong.
