KUCHING: The federal Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) top officials visited the Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) here on Sunday (Dec 27).

The visitors, led by the minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, introduced the programmes offered by Centexs and promote products produced by Centexs Commercial.

They visited the Digital Academy (Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality — AR VR Lab), AR Welding Simulator Lab, Maritime Simulator Lab and Huawei Centexs Lab); Heritage Gallery and Smart Home.

In line with the wishes of the state government as well as the industry to produce skilled and semi-skilled manpower according to the fields offered, Centexs pointed out that it offers courses in the technical, digital and heritage fields.

According to the centre, the uncertainty of the world economic growth has also impacted the development of the art and heritage industry. Thus, the development of heritage skills can be preserved through training and guidance by Centexs.

At Centexs, it offers several heritage programmes including fashion technology, basic commercial cookery, culinary arts, and tourist guide courses.

Centexs said recently, the Digital Academy also introduced programmes in line with the development of 5G and immersive technology needed in industries.

It said programmes that use AR and VR technology can provide meaningful knowledge to tourists. For instance, tourists can have the opportunity to explore tourist destinations in 3D as if it is in real life, and tourists can also choose and see the real view of interesting tourist locations before deciding to buy the package.

Other programmes offered include wireless hardware installation, storage-building; Android mobile application development, and smart manufacturing system.

Centexs said these programmes are internationally certified programmes with collaborations with Huawei, EON Reality, Keysight and Bosch Rexroth.

Centexs Commercial plays a role in marketing and commercialising heritage and digital products such as songket and keringkam, food products from local entrepreneurs, as well as traditional cakes by the Kaleng Kueh brand. These heritage products are produced by Centexs’ trainees, Puncak Borneo prison inmates as well as the entrepreneurial community identified through the Old Kuching Smart Heritage (Okshe) initiative.

The digital products marketed include technology products pioneered by Centexs trainees such as Centexs Smart Home (Smart Home), smart agricultural products through Centexs S Urban Smart Agriculture Technology (C-USAT) and smartphone applications that offer service providers with the on-demand concept of Sara-X.

The Sara-X application makes it easier for users to get the services of skilled workers immediately. With this innovation, Commercial Centexs not only helps commercialise heritage and digital products, but also opens up job opportunities and improves the socio economy of skilled workers in the state.
