MIRI: The business events segment is vital to the transformation of the state’s tourism industry, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“Everything we do in the business events industry today is an investment. The value of business events is greater than the tip of the iceberg,” the minister explained at the launch of the Business Events Tribal Meet here today.

He added that the state government planned to increase its corporate meetings and incentives segment to account for at least 20 percent contribution of the total business events to Sarawak in the next five years. This was in line with the objectives of the Sarawak Economic Action Council (Seac).

“Currently, Sarawak’s strength lies in conventions, with 80 percent of the business derived from associations,” he revealed.

To achieve its target for the conventions segment this year, the minister said the state would be focusing on  seven key  areas, namely urban development; social development; environmental development; re-engineering economic growth; rural transformation and  agriculture development as well as service industry and  digital economy.
