KUCHING: Ten barrels of fire extinguishers were donated to the Tabuan Jaya Fire Station to be transferred to villages in the area.

The items were sponsored by Penghulu Datuk Pui Chow Hin and were handed over to Tabuan Jaya Fire Station chief Mohamad Meramit during a visit by some community leaders to the fire station yesterday.

Following this, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Lintang Youth chief Lewis Liew Leong Yee thanked Pui for his sponsorship and the presence of community leaders during the visit.

“Due to the recent fire that broke out in Tabuan Dayak Lorong 5, the residences in the area are in urgent need of some fire extinguishers in case of emergencies.

“This is because in the settlement (Tabuan Dayak) many houses there are built of wood, and are very close to one another without basic fire protection equipment.

“Once a fire occurs, it is easy for it to spread quickly, thus resulting in more houses to be engulfed in flames and causing losses to the residents. Hence, the act of donating fire extinguishers is a very meaningful move because we must take precautions to avoid costly losses,” he said in his statement yesterday.

In light of this, he also reminded the public to pay attention to firefighting measures at home at all times.

“It is good that every family has a barrel of fire extinguishers, and it is also important to take note of the expiration date and maintenance of the fire extinguishers kept in one’s premises.

“Moreover, the public should also have awareness of fire prevention to avoid serious damage and casualties, especially during the dry season,” he added.
