SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) will hold a Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration dinner at Kingwood hotel here on Feb 17 at 7 pm.

According to Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, traditionally such an event was held every year at SUPP Kuching headquarters.

“But this year, for the first time, Sarawak government has set to organise CNY open house at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on the first day of CNY (Feb 10).

“Also for the first time ever, our party moves the state-level CNY celebration to Sibu, co-organised by  SUPP Sibu’s five branches, chaired by myself. We would like to thank our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who agreed to come to grace the event.

“As well, I would like thank the party president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian for assigning this very special celebration event to Sibu, ” he said at a press conference held at SUPP Sibu’s headquarters yesterday.

Also present were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, chairman of SUPP Bukit Assek Chieng Buong Toon, chairman of SUPP Pelawan Clarence Ting Ing Horth, chairman of SUPP Dudong Wong Ching Yong, chairman of SUPP Nangka Benson Chua and secretary of SUPP Bawang Assan Kevin Lau.

Tiang said invitation for the event would be sent to various Chinese organisations or associations and other SUPP branches across the state for them to participate together in the CNY celebration.

Other component parties of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), he said, would also be invited to join the event hosted by SUPP.

“We are expecting more than 150 dinner tables but we have yet to finalise the table number. We will try to invite as many local Chinese NGOs to come for the event together with the Premier.

“We are also holding this event in conjunction with the SUPP’s 65th anniversary celebration as well.  As Sibu is the first branch of SUPP’s establishment in 1959, our party president chose the appropriate venue to hold this event for this year,” he added.
