KUCHING: A male trader was sentenced to 96 months in prison and two lashes by the Sessions Court here today for snatching a woman’s handbag and causing her injuries in early October.

Dennil Fauzi, 32, from Kampung Haji Baki, pleaded guilty to the charge read before Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi.

According to the charge, he, along with another individual still at large, snatched a 52-year-old woman’s handbag, causing her injuries.

They committed the crime at a booth selling parking ticket coupons in Jalan Song, around 9.08 am on October 2.

Therefore, he was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code. If found guilty, the accused can be imprisoned for up to 20 years and can be fined or whipped.

According to the case details, at the time of the incident, the complainant, who is the victim’s sister, received a call from the victim stating that her handbag had been snatched by two men on a motorcycle in front of a booth selling parking ticket coupons at Jalan Song.

When the complainant arrived at the scene, she saw the victim with injuries on her left arm and swelling on her head. The complainant then took the victim to the hospital for further treatment before filing a police report for further action.

The victim lost important items such as an ATM card, identification card, driving license, credit card, and cash amounting to RM700.

On October 4, around 9.45 pm, the police received a report of a snatch theft case in front of a shopping centre at Jalan Simpang Tiga which was successfully detained by the public.

The police subsequently arrested the accused for further action.

The investigation found that the accused had caused injuries to the victim during the snatch based on the police report on October 2.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammad Fauzan Zamri, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
