KUCHING: Traffic lights set up by the Public Works Department (JKR) in Kota Samarahan will help ease traffic congestion in the area.

Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman, Datuk Peter Minos revealed that the traffic lights would be set up at five roundabouts — three within MPKS’ jurisdiction and two in Kuching South City Council (MBKS) area — from the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) Sarawak to Stutong area.

“It is learned that JKR had already put up the project for public tender. Hopefully, work will start at the end of this year. As such, MPKS is delighted upon hearing the news and so are the locals,” he said in a press statement, on Monday.

Minos explained that the council had been dealing with severe traffic jam woes in the area since 2016.

“I sympathise with the people in Samarahan who have to bear being stuck in traffic for at least one hour day in and day out.

“Now, the people in Samarahan can sigh in relief. Although the project will cause some inconveniences, it will not be for too long as it is better to solve this big problem once and for all,” he said.

Besides that, Minos assured that the council would work and cooperate fully with the developers and promoters of the proposed autonomous rapid transit (ART) project from Kuching to Kota Samarahan.

“Everybody in Samarahan wants and needs the ART project as together with the traffic lights, it will solve traffic problems in the area.”
