BINTULU: Construction companies in the state have been told to get more local workers and train them in the latest skills, including those have specialised skills in the field.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said this could solve the problem of shortage of such workers which could affect the completion schedule of local projects.
He said this after attending a briefing on the construction progress of the RM467 millions Bintulu- Jepak Bridge crossing the Kemena River, yesterday (April 23).
The project is a joint venture between PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd and a Chinese company, the China Communications Construction Company (M) Sdn Bhd.
Uggah noted that the bridge was expected to be completed on September 28, 2023.
The Infrastructure and Port Development Minister said the option to take local workers would allow the state to build up on its pool of specialist workers.
“Then we will not have to depend so much on foreigners,” said Uggah.
Meanwhile, Uggah called on the relevant authorities to speed up the approval of visa for foreign specialist workers needed for the successful completion of some major infrastructure projects in the state.
