KUCHING: The train technology for urban transportation will definitely solve Samarahan’s infamous traffic jam problems.

Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos said MPKS is happy with the recent announcement that the state government will go ahead with the train project.

“We do want and need the train because we have been bearing the heavy traffic jam problems at peak hours. Thus, having a train from Samarahan to Kuching is almost a god-sent and much desired,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

Minos recalled that on Nov 11 last year when Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that he would bring Light Rail Transit (LRT) to Samarahan and Kuching, the people of Samarahan were elated.

“It is just like seeing a light at the end of the tunnel… like a life-saver,” he said.

Insisting that the traffic jam in Samarahan is not a small matter, he said, “If you live in Kota Samarahan like I do and experience the daily traffic jam nightmares yourself, then you would know what I am talking about.

“As the chairman of MPKS, I would like to say thank you once again to Abang Johari for his concern to Samarahan people.

“Samarahan is very fast growing and expanding, the highest for any town in Sarawak at six percent per year, MPKS has to see that traffic woes must be well-handled or else development and investment will be adversely affected.

“The same goes for waste management, basic utilities like water and electricity, landscaping and health care, etc. MPKS works with other agencies on all these matters. It is our council duties to the people. It is our direct concern.”
