KUCHING: The younger generation must be trained in new technology to meet the demands of the future workforce.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that new disciplines
could equip them with skills set and knowledge to deal with new technologies.

“Sarawak’s strength, as you all know, is our resources and it is only wise for us now to add value to our resources such as water to produce new renewable energy like hydrogen that will not only transform the world economy but also help with climate change.

“In this era, our problem is climate change and we are facing calamities all over the world. Let’s not forget about temperature rising from global warming and that is why we have to explore ways to mitigate global warming to make the world a safer place by cooling down the atmosphere.

“Sarawak can play that important role by producing green energy for the globe as we have an abundance of water from our hydro dams, rainfall and rivers,” he said at the 7th Convocation of CENTEXS here, today.

He pointed out as vehicles become more high-tech, Sarawak will need new mechanics and technicians trained to fix electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, hydrogen vehicles and self-driving vehicles.

“Now we have hydrogen car with no carburettor and no gear change. You only press the button to drive, reverse and stop the car.

“Therefore, we will need mechanics with knowledge of these new and emerging technologies in addition to our old technicians. We have to teach this new discipline to our young,” he added.

He also called on the CENTEXS graduates and Sarawakians in general to keep learning, innovating and exploring new ideas, or otherwise, risk themselves from being left behind.

“Even if you have a degree qualification, but your degree cannot be applied to an ever-changing environment, you may turn out to become an unemployed graduate.

“This is the dilemma faced by graduates today and they need to adapt with the time,” he explained.
