Transport Ministry to build first lorry terminal in Miri

BINTULU: The heavy vehicle industry will have its own terminals throughout the state with the first one to be built in Miri soon.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said his ministry has obtained allocations for the project in Miri, the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) reported.

“Such terminals will also be built in Kuching, Sibu and Bintulu.

“It will facilitate the operation of heavy vehicles to become more efficient in future,” he said when officiating at the ‘Lab on Weight Restriction Order: Solution to Harmonise Operation of Heavy Vehicles in Sarawak’ here yesterday (Feb 1).

Lee said his ministry will try to deal with the problems faced by the heavy transport sector as a step towards empowering the sector.

Meanwhile, the lab organised by the minsitry in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) aims to study the current weight restriction order and regulations on heavy vehicles, safety guidelines and procedures related to the capacity of road, bridge and sewer structures in Sarawak.

The lab is expected to produce solutions and recommendations to overcome the challenges faced by logistics industry players related to weight restrictions and the capacity of roads and bridges in this state.

Lee said the review of current weight restrictions is important to facilitate and improve logistics business activities and reduce the cost of transporting goods and doing business in Sarawak.

Also present were Deputy Minister of transport Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming and Bintulu Resident Nyurak Keti.
