KUCHING: The Transport Ministry will be taking over the Road Safety Council from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Ports Development next year.

Its minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin explained that his ministry will take over the council this coming January.

“Once we take over the council, we will continue to implement existing programmes as well as introducing new programmes for road users in the state,” he said after launching Ops Selamat in conjunction with the Christmas season at Boulevard Shopping Mall.

He added the main cause of accidents in Sarawak is due to human error such as speeding, not using the turn signal, and cutting lanes.

For that, his ministry will soon launch a road safety programme called Awareness and Behavioural Change (ABC).

“In this programme, we want our road users to be aware on what causes an accident and how to avoid them. We also want them to practice a safety culture and obey traffic laws.

“Apart from that, it is known that most road users do not signal when changing lanes, run the red light, speed, and drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Hence with this programme, we want them to be more disciplined and concerned for the safety of others,” Lee said.

On another note regarding smart traffic lights, he pointed out that his ministry is working with Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) and local authorities to help reduce traffic congestion in the state.

Currently, there are 321 traffic lights throughout Sarawak and 73 of them have been upgraded to smart traffic lights.
