KUCHING: Sarawakians from Covid-19 red zones in the state who need to travel to green zones need not undergo the 14-day quarantine but they must apply for travel permit from the police if they really needed to do so.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the police would only allow those from the red zones to travel to the green zones under special cases during the movement control order (MCO) period.

“They have to apply. We have discussed with the police and they understand the importance of assuring there is not much movement from the red to the green zones.

“We hope the public will adhere to that directive, and the police promised us that they will enforce and will only allow any movement under special cases, such as if there is funeral and others,” he said at a press conference on the daily update on Covid-19 yesterday.

Uggah, who is also the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, said if there was really a need to travel between districts and those from the red going to the green zones, the state would not enforce any quarantine order on this.

“But for Sarawakians returning from outside (overseas and other states), they must undergo quarantine,” he said.

On the matter of temporary shelters opening due to floods in certain areas in the state and what procedures would be taken to maintain social distancing, Uggah said the respective Divisional and District Disaster Management Committee would look after the matter.

“This morning, we had a meeting and I told the Divisional and District Disaster Management Committee (that) while in our fight to curb the Covid-19 outbreak, we must also not forget our other duties,” he pointed out.

Uggah added that he also received reports on shortage of water supply in Serian and had instructed the committee to handle the issue.
