BINTULU: A fishing trawler and two crew members were detained by Marine Police for illegally fishing off Bintulu last Friday (July 16).

Bintulu Marine police commanding officer ASP Ezuandi Bahadin said the two crews comprised a local and a foreign fisherman.

“Investigations found that the local man was using the services of a foreign fisherman without permission from the director of Fisheries Department,” he said.

Aside from the trawler, police also seized a set of compasses, nets, GPS plotter and Icom VHF radio and two sets of signage. All the seized items including the vessel was estimated to be worth approximately RM250,000.

Ezuandi said the vessel had committed an offence under the Fisheries Act 1985.

The vessel was taken to the Bintulu Marine police headquarters jetty and the case was referred to the Bintulu Fisheries Department for further action.

The suspects (centre) are arrested for illegally fishing off Bintulu.
